2004 Meeting Minutes Archive

July

Peggy Javery, CGFM, President, called the meeting of the Chapter Executive Committee (CEC) for the New Orleans Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) to order at 11:20 a.m.  She asked everyone to introduce themselves, tell what position they hold on the CEC, and whether they were a new officer.

Ms. Javery stated she had attended the regional Baton Rouge training meeting.  She then asked Ronald J.  Parent, CPA, CGFM, Immediate Past President, to give a brief background on the chapter recognition point system.  She announced that James J. Julian, CGFM, President Elect, would be responsible for tracking the chapter recognition points earned.

Babette Haines, Membership Chair, received the membership information from Linda Lewis, the former chairperson.

Barbara Carmen, Programs Chair, reported that Edgar Chase would be the September speaker, and would be speaking on risk management.  Seven speakers will be needed for the year.  The January meeting will be a tax update and other possible topics included crime in New Orleans, personal safety, homeland security and a speaker on Investments.  Debbie Conway-Fikes will provide a Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants’ speakers list.

Pamela B. Lincoln, CPA, CGFM, Meetings Chair, announced she is looking for input for the dinner meetings.  There was a discussion on probable sites and the dates of the meetings where announced.

Shelda Melancon needs to provide a mailbox to new editors for the newsletter.

Debbie Conway-Fikes, Awards Chair, announced that the scholarship would be presented to a Dillard University student this year.  There was a discussion as to whether AGA should also give the student a membership to AGA.

There was a discussion on possible fundraisers as well as new and different community service activities.  The Baton Rouge AGA Chapter won the national community service award again this year.  The New Orleans Chapter should brain storm with the Baton Rouge chapter for new ideas.

Ms. Javery advised that the next meeting would be August 11th, at which time the budget and finances would be discussed.

April

Bernie Zimlicki, President-Elect of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants, called the joint meeting of the New Orleans and Baton Rouge Chapters of the Association of Government Accountants to order at 6:10 p.m. at Bull’s Corner Restaurant in La Place, Louisiana.  He made several announcements and had several committee chairs give their respective reports.  He introduced the Baton Rogue officers for the 2004-2005 year, and then turned the meeting over to Ronald J. Parent, CPA, CGFM, and President of the New Orleans Chapter.

Mr. Parent announced the success in scheduling training with the Federal Executive Board, and that eight hours of CPE will be offered at a cost of $99.00 on June 9th.  He said that information would be emailed to the members.  Mr. Parent then introduced Peggy Javery, CGFM, and President-Elect of the New Orleans Chapter.  Ms. Javery introduced the New Orleans Chapter officers for the 2004-2005 year.   They are as follows:  President – Peggy Javery, President elect – Jim Julian, Treasurer – Gary Millet, Secretary – Mary Herbert,  Membership – Babette Haines, Newsletter Co-editors – Faye Wilson and Warren Wilson, Education – Marcie Tureaud and Chris Cuttio, Meetings -  Pam Lincoln, Programs – Barbara Carmen, Historian - Dawn Wagener, Publicity – Wilbert Antoine, Public Service co-chairs Jill Byrd and Pat Hanks, Awards - Debbie Conway-Fikes,  Immediate Past President and Web Site Coordinator – Ron Parent, CGFM Director – Marcia Curole.

Mr. Parent then introduced new members that were present and announced the names of those new members.

Mr. Parent then introduced Gerry Knepp, one of the Public Service Chairs, who gave a report on Public Service.  Mr. Knepp announced a very impressive list of activities in which the New Orleans Chapter participated, including Thanksgiving food baskets, teddy bears for Children’s Hospital, participating in the Rebuilding Together Low Income Home Revitalization Project, and volunteering at WYES TV Showboat Auction.  He asked for volunteers on May 21..

Mr. Parent announced that next month’s meeting would be held on May 14. and would be a crawfish boil.

After an appetizing dinner, Lynn McNair of the Baton Rouge Chapter led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, and then introduced the evening’s speaker, Jullin Renthrope, CPA, CGFM, CFE, CGFO, and the National President of AGA.  Mr. Renthrope spoke on AGA’s hopes for advancing government accountability through promoting professionalism, public awareness, shaping legislation, building relationships with business and other agencies, and being a source of information.  He also talked about AGA’s Certification of Excellence and Accountability Reporting (CEAR) Program.  He shared procedures that have been tried during the pilot year and the results.  Mr. Renthrope reminded everyone of the upcoming PDC, and said his goal for this year has been to successfully market the CEAR Program.

After Mr. Renthrope’s informative lecture, Ms. McNair presented him with a gift.  Mr. Renthrope pulled the winner of the 50/50 raffle.  Cynthia Wingate, a guest of the New Orleans Chapter won $18.00.

Having no further business, the meeting was adjourned 8:00 p.m.


March

Sandra Scillitani, CPA, President of the New Orleans Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA), called the joint meeting of ASWA and the New Orleans Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) to order at 6:18 p.m. at Five Happiness Restaurant. She introduced Ronald J. Parent, CPA, CGFM, President of AGA. Ms. Scillitani then called upon Diane Allison for the invocation after which the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Ms. Scillitani asked the AGA Board members to stand and introduce themselves. Then she requested the ASWA Board members do the same.

Mr. Parent advised on the health of Gary Millet, Treasurer and thanked everyone who had participated in the blood drive that day at the National Finance Center on behalf of Mr. Millet. Mr. Parent then read a note from Mr. Millet.

Mr. Parent announced next year's officers for AGA and next month's meeting to be held on April 22, 2004 at Bull's Corner in La Place.

After Ms. Scillitani completed ASWA business, Mr. Parent announced the winner of this year's scholarship award, Patricia Small, an accounting major at Our Lady of Holy Cross College.

Mr. Parent then introduced Jill Byrd, one of the Public Service Chairs, who thanked everyone who participated in VITA. Ms. Byrd reminded everyone that old cell phones were still being collected as well as videos for the video program at Ochsner Hospital. She also asked for volunteers for WYES on May 21, 2004.

After a delicious dinner, Special Agent Michael Gordon with the New Orleans Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation began his presentation on identity theft. He spoke on the many ways identity theft occurs, and what to do if you become a victim of identity theft.

After Special Agent Gordon's informative lecture, he pulled the winner of the 50/50 raffle, an ASWA member who won $76.00.

Mr. Parent then introduced two new AGA members, Godwin Ndukwe and Theresa Vo.

Having no further business, the meeting was adjourned 8:40 p.m.


February

Ronald J. Parent, CPA, CGFM, President, called the meeting of the New Orleans Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants to order at 6:15 p.m. at Doug's Restaurant in Slidell, Louisiana. He introduced Peggy Javery, President-Elect, who gave the invocation after which Mr. Parent led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mr. Parent introduced the head table and gave a status report on the market earnings. He then introduced Jill Byrd, one of the Public Service Chairs. She announced that VITA, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, would be held at the Clearview Mall on March 3, 2004 and March 9, 2004 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m and requested Volunteers to perform this service.

After a delicious dinner, Mr. Parent introduced Vincent Parenti, Programs Chair, who presented the speaker for the evening, Don Carroum, Public Affairs/Annual Wage Reporting Specialist for the Social Security Administration. Mr. Carroum provided statistics on the numbers and types of people receiving assistance, and addressed the continuing theories of Social Security going broke. He ended by explaining Medicare plans A and B.

After Mr. Carroum's informative lecture, Mr. Parent thanked him and presented him with a gift of appreciation. Mr. Carroum pulled the winner of the 50/50 raffle, Lydia Boutte who won $24.00.

Having no further business, Mr. Parent adjourned the meeting at 8:40 p.m


January 2004   

Ronald J. Parent, CPA, CGFM, President, called the meeting of the New Orleans Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants to order at 11:40 a.m. in the cafeteria at the National Finance Center. Shirlaine George gave the invocation after which Mr. Parent led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mr. Parent introduced the head table and then Jill Byrd, one of the Public Service Chairs. She thanked everyone who gave toys for the Toys for Tots program and teddy bears for Christmas for Children's' Hospital. Ms. Byrd said that the Chapter gave 29 toys for the Toys for Tots program and 86 teddy bears to Children's' Hospital.

Lila Thompson, one of the editors, asked that information for the newsletter be sent to her on time, and thanked those who had provided information.

Mr. Parent welcomed new members Theresa Vo and C. B. Wolcott.

After a delicious lunch, Mr. Parent said that the Education Committee is working on the Spring Conference, and asked that if anyone has any ideas for subjects and speakers to please contact one of the Education Chairs.

Mr. Parent introduced Vincent Parenti, Programs Chair, who explained the process for CPE credit. Mr. Parenti then presented the speaker, Henry "Hank" Padeletti, Senior Tax Specialist for Taxpayer Education and Communication for the Small Business/Self-Employed Division of the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Padeletti spoke on tax law changes for 2003.

After Mr. Padeletti's informative lecture, Mr. Parenti presented him with a gift of appreciation.

Mr. Parent announced that the next meeting would be held on February 12, 2004 at Doug's in Slidell.
